MINIMALLY INVASIVE SPINE SURGERY

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) is an advanced surgical technique designed to treat various spinal conditions through small incisions, typically less than one inch in length. Using specialized instruments and real-time imaging technology, surgeons can access the spine while minimizing disruption to surrounding muscles and tissues. This approach offers several benefits compared to traditional open spine surgery, including smaller scars, reduced risk of infection, less blood loss, decreased post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times, and a faster return to daily activities.

During MISS, the surgeon makes one or more small incisions to insert tubular retractors and dilators, which gently separate muscles and create a narrow working channel to the spine. An endoscope or surgical microscope is used to visualize the area, while precision instruments perform the necessary procedure—such as removing a herniated disc or stabilizing a vertebra. Once the surgery is complete, the instruments are withdrawn, and the tissue naturally returns to its original position. The incision is then closed with minimal suturing and dressed appropriately. MISS has become a preferred option for many patients due to its effectiveness, safety, and rapid recovery outcomes.
