Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)
Femoroacetabular Impingement, commonly called FAI, is a condition in which there is abnormal contact between the femoral head/neck junction and the rim of the acetabulum.
There are three types of Femoroacetabular Impingement:
Pincer: Excessive acetabular coverage leads to abnormal collision during hip movement.
Cam: An irregular femoral head contour causes friction with the acetabulum during flexion.
Combined: Both Pincer and Cam types coexist, creating complex interactions and potential joint damage. Treatment depends on specific characteristics for each type.
Individuals with FAI condition will often experience the following symptoms:
- Pain in the hip joint is often felt in the groin area but can also radiate to the thigh, buttock, or lower back.
- Stiffness in the hip joint, making it difficult to move the hip freely
- Restricted range of motion in the hip, causing discomfort or pain when attempting to move the hip in certain directions, such as internal or external rotation.
- Pain or discomfort is often triggered by certain movements, such as flexing the hip, squatting, or sitting for extended periods.
- Sensation of the hip "catching" or "clicking" during certain movements.
- Activities that involve bearing weight on the affected hip, such as standing for long periods or walking, may lead to pain and discomfort.
- Sitting for extended periods, especially in low or soft chairs.

Labrum Tears
Commonly seen in athletes participating in high impact sports, hip labrum tears involve the ring of cartilage that follows the outside rim of your hip joint socket. The labrum cushions the hip joint and acts like a rubber seal or gasket to hold the femoral head securely within the hip socket.
Tears are not always caused by trauma and may be caused by structural abnormalities and normal wear and tear so some individuals may not experience immediate symptoms, instead they find themselves coping with the following:
- Pain in your hip or groin after long periods of standing, sitting or walking
- Sensation of locking, clicking or catching in your hip
- Stiffness or limited range of motion in your hip

Bursitis
Hip bursitis is a condition in which a bursa sac on the inside or outside of the hip becomes irritated and inflamed, affecting the bursa and the soft tissue around it. A bursa is a sac of synovial fluid, rich in protein and collagen that acts as a cushion to protect soft tissue, such as tendons, ligaments and muscle, from friction and excess pressure. Symptoms of hip bursitis may include:
- Pain in the outer part of the hip or buttock.
- The affected area may be tender to the touch.
- Radiating pain down the outside of the thigh, sometimes as far as the knee.
- Stiffness in the hip joint, making it difficult to move or perform daily activities.
- Pain that typically worsens with activities that involve repetitive hip movements.
- Pain when lying on the affected side.
- Pain present even when at rest, especially during the night.
- Some individuals with hip bursitis may experience swelling and redness at the site of the affected bursa.
If you suspect you have hip bursitis or are experiencing these symptoms, make an appointment today to meet with a physician.
Tendonitis
Tendonitis in the hip is inflammation and degeneration in the tendons often related to stress and overuse. This pain happens over time and can cause tenderness, stiffness, pain coming and going through the day and discomfort when contracting muscles.
Recovering from tendonitis involves a combination of self-care measures and professional guidance. Visit iOrthoNOW for immediate orthopedic care, no appointment needed Monday through Friday, 8-4PM.
Arthritis
Arthritis is a condition that results in degeneration of the cartilage within the joint. The symptoms of arthritis are primarily pain and stiffness causing difficulty with prolonged standing and ambulation as well as with ADLs such as putting on shoes and socks
