Many patients with shoulder problems notice something frustrating. Their shoulder may feel manageable during the day but become much more painful at night.
In fact, nighttime shoulder pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek evaluation from an orthopedic specialist.
Several shoulder conditions can contribute to this problem. Rotator cuff tears, shoulder bursitis, tendonitis and arthritis are among the most frequent causes. These conditions can create inflammation and irritation within the joint that becomes more noticeable when the body is at rest.
Sleeping position can also play a role. Lying directly on the affected shoulder places pressure on already irritated tissues. Even sleeping on the opposite side may allow the injured shoulder to shift into positions that increase discomfort.
Rotator cuff injuries are particularly known for causing nighttime pain. Many patients report difficulty finding a comfortable position and frequent waking throughout the night. Some describe a dull ache while others experience sharp pain when they move the arm during sleep.
Poor sleep can create a cycle that becomes difficult to break. Pain interferes with rest. Lack of quality sleep can make pain feel worse the next day. Over time, both symptoms may continue to worsen.
While ice, activity modification and anti-inflammatory medications may provide temporary relief, persistent nighttime shoulder pain should not be ignored. Ongoing symptoms may indicate an underlying condition that requires further evaluation.
An orthopedic examination combined with imaging studies can often identify the source of the problem. Once a diagnosis is made, treatment can be tailored to the patient’s specific condition.
In some cases, physical therapy and non-surgical treatments provide excellent results. In others, shoulder surgery may be recommended to repair damaged tissue and restore proper function.
If shoulder pain regularly interferes with your sleep, it may be time to seek professional evaluation rather than continuing to manage the symptoms on your own.
