5 Common Shoulder Injuries

Your arms and shoulders do so much for you. You can move your arms behind, to the side and front, but that all depends on maintaining a healthy shoulder joint. If you have shoulder pain or limited mobility, it can be difficult to determine the cause. Sore shoulders can be caused by everything from excessive use to arthritis.

However, here are five of the most common shoulder injuries and how to heal them.

  1. Rotator cuff injury or tear

The rotator cuff is one of the most common shoulder injuries and surgeries. The rotator cuff is made up of the muscles and tendons that hold your arm to your shoulder and help you lift your arm overhead. It’s often damaged through overuse, sports-related injury or falling and may require surgery to repair it.

  1. Dislocation

A dislocated shoulder is caused when your arm is pulled back too far or too hard and your arm pops out of its socket. It’s healed through relocating the shoulder, which should be done by a doctor.

  1. Fractures

Shoulder fractures are quite common and can be caused by falling or getting hit too hard. When you have a fracture, it can be very painful, and you may notice bruising. Complex fractures may require surgery like total shoulder replacement.

  1. Frozen Shoulder

A frozen shoulder is a condition in which your joint will have very limited to no movement. Your shoulder may feel ‘frozen’ and bands of tissue build up which prevents movement. It’s most common in people ages 40 to 60 and in women. A common procedure to fix a frozen shoulder is arthroscopy, followed by physical therapy.

  1. Impingement Syndrome (Bursitis)

Impingement syndrome, also known as bursitis, is when your rotator cuff tendons are trapped and pinched between the bones of your shoulder. It can be caused by repeating the same motion often, or by a fall or injury. This is best healed through arthroscopy surgery.

If you suspect you have any of these shoulder injuries, you should contact a doctor immediately to get help.
